"Wissen ist Macht"
(... nichts wissen macht nichts ;p )
Information is power.
More information decreases the potential empowerment of the people,
because more items equal more noise. So here I add more noise by selecting
a very few news pages and blogs from the trenches to your collection.
The idea with this link collection is, that we use the Internet more and more for
finding non-technological information, also many of us don't read the paper-news anymore, so therefore this
very tiny guide to lifehackery on the Internet.
Most of these pages come with feeds, so open up your feed reader of your choice :)

The British Broadcasting Corporation. Operating under the British public service broadcasting, which means it does not live on subscription or advertising. My first stop when needing Non-Danish news.

The Guardian is a British newspaper, and the web page has won a couple of awards. The page is a collaboration between The Guardian and The Observer. It praises itself to be politically independent, and was published first time as the Manchester Guardian in 1821. The Observer is published since 1791, stating that it would share "the spirit of enlightened Freedom, decent Toleration and universal Benevolence."

Quote from the site: RFE/RL serves as a "surrogate" free press in 21 countries where the free flow of information is either banned by government authorities or not fully developed. Our journalists provide what many people in those countries cannot get locally: uncensored news, responsible discussion, and open debate. You may also read their [Mission statement]
I read it for the wider outlook.

The World's largest international news service, as they say on their own page. You decide, whether it is also is the best.
Reuters has merged with the Thomson Corporation, which provides, amongst a lot of others, scientific search databases such as ISI Web of Knowledge.
Largely acclaimed for their professionalism and integrity.

Quote from the site: On this website, my guest authors and editors and I hope to present interesting items
from around the web on a daily basis, in the areas of science, design, literature, current affairs, art,
and anything else we deem inherently fascinating.

This page collects the 100 most frequent words and images from worldwide online media,
and creates a ten by ten grid of these data every hour. Very addictive ;)

AlterNet is a news magazine by the Independent Media Institute, which is a non-profit organization.
I found this resource to spark a lot of thoughts, so you may take a plunge :)

Quote from the site: The first multi-expert blog dedicated solely to counterterrorism issues,
serving as a gateway to the community for policymakers and serious researchers.
Designed to provide realtime information about terrorism cases and policy developments.
By far better than the "TERRIST" bs of mainstream media.

Newsaggregat on prescription drugs and non-prescription drugs.

German news resource on data issues, mainly accomplished by unpaid people from the data-trenches. Wow, my lame description =_=
|
|
German news web-magazine mainly on IT-technology, but related topics are covered as well.
Highly cited and mentioned in the parts of German bloggery I visit.

Kuro5hin ("Corrosion", i. e. Rusty-ness) shows, what these new shiny things and funky pills also can be used for.
This page had me when I saw a report on, how a guy who was severely impaired by allergies and asthma managed to lessen his symptoms with a hook worm infection.
So to speak this page shows the black, corrosive heart of life, according to a couple of wonderfully crazy people.
Participation is voluntary, but very well-received.

Privacy.Org is the site for daily news, information, and initiatives on privacy. This web page is a joint project of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) and Privacy International.
It is rather American-centered, but usable for Non-Americans too.

News about religious movements, cults, sects, world religions and related issues.
Also in my opinion they tag their news really well, so if you for example want to follow only news on the Church of Scientology or keep an eye on a particular country, you can easily do it.

Your daily dose of large parts of the World. Metblogs are 50+ group blogs, where the members post about their city, as they see it. There are lots of Indian blogs, some Far East, and of course a lot of American. There is a Berlin blog also :o)

This is the first blog that made me understand blogs and their news value outside the traditional news channels.
