Colleen Doran became famous around my parts for "A Distant Soil", the story about these two siblings, who have special powers, and, as it later on shows, they are Avatar-priests of their planet by birth. Around those kind of people political infiltrations and ugliness tends to appear. In this case it is, that Avatars are unwanted and therefore we have a story.

Colleen Doran's artwork for the novels is gorgeous, detailed, girly and has a bit of Raphaelian fleshiness and realism which prevents it from becoming bubbles of show-off skills. You go "Wow", because it is wow, and not because you saw a fancy art school trick at work.

These days Colleen Doran works on an array of interesting projects, and she has worked with amongst many others Warren Ellis. Colleen Doran intrigues me not only for her very skilled art, but also for her professional versality, for example: pick up "A Distant Soil" (for example HERE, online and legal and free of charge) and after that "Orbiter" and you know, what I mean. Besides creating wonderful art, she is also a recognised lecturer, and has received a grant to study American popular culture.

She also is known to me as a person, who is honest and outspoken, who stands up for herself and others, and who always can back her own opinions up. Colleen's person definitely matches her art. Also, she interacts with her audience on her [blog]. On that very same blog she posts massive amounts of art, so do read it on a regular basis.
